Why Socialism Won't Work

My dad sent this email to me, and I thought I'd pass it on to my readers:

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had once failed an entire class.

That class insisted that Obama's socialism will work and that no one will be poor and no one will be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".
All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could it be any simpler than that?

Living in South Florida, which has a very large Cuban community, I've heard this same logic many times. The people living on the island of Cuba get paid a set salary that is decided by the government and not on the effort of the worker. Consequently, the same story is told over and over: the people work as little as possible, stealing is very common in the workplace, and since there is little to no chance of advancement the workplace is more of a social network than a place to earn a living. The economy and morale on the island are so low, people will actually get in an inner tube or small sailboat just to escape. Yes, it still happens, even if it isn't in the news much anymore.

If socialism worked, Russia would still be communist.

I hope all of his supporters are happy now. I wonder if they wake up wondering what in the world they were thinking when they selected that name on the ballad.

Then, did you hear Biden the other day when he said that they "misread" how bad the economy was? One would think that the ability to read and comprehend would be a requirement for the leaders of our country. I could go on but I'll spare you. This administration is definitely one to go down in the books... for many reasons.

I'm living in a country that was "socialist" for 50 years. It is over nearly 20 years now and many people still haven't understood the change. The situation is quite similar to the one in Cuba. Not nice.

We live in a world already surrounded by solcialist ideas, 12 years of free school, free police service, free emergency aid, free health care for the young and old among many others. Of course there will be people who take advangtage of the system just like there are now. I believe that says something more about you and not the system. But more the the point Obama has never said he wants socialism.

I've read this before it is an urban legend. It circulated when Carter was in office as well as Clinton. The above noter is correct, Obama has never stated he wants Socialism. I spent post-graduate years at Oxford in the UK in economics, before I went on to Law School. The comment above about Russia and Communism is flawed in that Communism is a) not Socialism and b) what Lenin implemented was a twisted version of Socialism. In non-shocking form he adjusted it so it would suit his needs and essentially establish him in an autocracy in the guise of"Socialism." We do enjoy a level of Socialistesque programs already, public school, WIC, subsidies on child care so parents can work.
Given my current position, and my current clients (many of which are part of the banking problem - capitalism run amok) It isn't that people would work with less reward, it is that everyday people would work toward a more attainable reward, whilst the abusers at the top would be reigned in and regulated.
All the above to say, it is dangerous to bandy about labels in general.

Love ya Mandy!

Ok so I found you on THL months ago and signed up to be a "follower" (baaa baaa!) and then totally forgot... just rediscovered you and have had the best time getting caught up on all your lovely posts! You have a beautiful way with words, a beautiful family, and I especially enjoyed all the things we have in common (homeschooling, home births, healthy living, etc). Thanks for being there and I will promise not to let 8 months go by without stopping by again!

Ha - that is a great real-life application and a lesson those students will never forget (though I'm glad I wasn't in that class....!).

I just hope all of this will carry on to our next election. We cannot take 8 years of this.

What Obama is doing to business men is horrible too. I used to think he just didn't get it. Now I think he is fully aware of what he is doing. He wants to be King and have everyone dependent on him.

Bush and his Republicans tripled the size of the Dept. of Education, created the massive Dept. of Homeland Security and began the "War on Terror", effectively bankrupting our country. And you want to accuse Obama of socialism, a form of it is on the way but it isn't all Obama's/Dem's fault. The left/right paradigm is distracting you from the real picture and allowing the real crminals to work behind the curtains. Ignorance of the truth is what got us here...
